Are you organizing your state tour and planning to land at Portland Airport (PWM) or Bangor Airport (BGR)? To help you on this mission, Happy Tours has selected unmissable destination tips that are sure to make your stay even more unforgettable. Come along and get ready to visit Maine!

Portland for history lovers!

Many people don't know it, but the largest and most populous city in Maine is not the capital. Portland, with its 66,000 inhabitants, is the densest and busiest city in the state, while the current capital, Augusta, is much less inhabited and very characterized by the tranquility of the countryside. For those who seek eclectic urban programs and an interesting nightlife, Portland is the right destination.

There, get to know the historical and beautiful Portland Lighthouse, built in 1971. This is the oldest lighthouse in Maine, and it is still in use. The landscape deserves appreciation and must be part of your itinerary! Don't forget to walk along the Old Port and get to know the Victoria Mansion, an original 19th century building open to visitation.

Bangor for those who love pop culture!

The Bangor region is full of affordable destinations and hosts interesting music festivals such as the American Folk Festival and National Folk. It was also home to the renowned Portland-born American novelist Stephen King. In Bangor, he has written and modeled many of his books known for their supernatural horror.

The melancholy climate and the lake houses so common in the region inspired stories like "Carrie" (1974) and "Gerald’s Game" (1992). The characteristic landscapes of the city were richly described in the celebrated "It" (1986), a book that gained a recent and important adaptation for the cinema. Anyone with courage can visit Mount Hope, the real place that inspired King in the classic "The Cemetery" (1983).

Don't miss the visit to the author's house, with its ghostly architecture easily recognizable. Guided tours of "haunted" Bangor spots can also be a good ask for those who like creepy itineraries. Don't forget, of course, to stop by the Bangor Museum and History Center, with complete collections about the region's rich past.
